York Faber Shield Match Reports 2014~15
The Faber Shield committee would like to thank Colin Robinson for all his previous press reporting and also from all the players in the League. Colin has now handed over the reporting to Alan Reed and,to try and get the weekly reporting to the York Press by each Friday it would help if all Captains could supply him with a brief report of their match by e-mail or text by Thursday. As such I have added a new Submit Results page which allows you to send me the details of any match results and add any information that will be useful for me to write a match report - what's more you don't even need an email address to send me the details!
September 2014 Reports
September 3rd 2014 - Carlsberg-UK Snooker Round-Up
Welcome to the new season which got under way on Wednesday 3rd September 2014 with a great start made by current champions Malton who won 6-1 at Bootham B with Lee Taylor the star man with a 58 break which could have been more as he jumped the white over the black for a foul when in a good position to add to his break. Other wins for Malton came from D Spiteri,R Ward,P Hart,S Beal and S Weatherhill (25 break). M Smith being the only win for Bootham.
Last years runners up Heworth A also got off to a good start beating Fulford A 5-2 with Clive Whyte setting Pasema Pavinghighest break target with a well constructed 68 in his win.Mark Winskill hit a 41 break but just held on against Sam England with a black ball pot. Other wins for Heworth came from G Douglas,A Scaife and J Wolobec,with J Husband and S Wass for Fulford.
Fulford B defeated Heworth B 4-3 with wins from R Smith,J Rollinson,J Adcock and A Hurley with replies from I Strickland, C De Pasquale and C Richardson. The biggest shock came at Acomb where the B team defeated the A team 5-2 .being 5-0 up until K Thornhill and M Borg save any further embarrasment! Acomb B winners were K Ventress,J Winter,B Henry,N Goodacre(black ball) and C Nicholson.
September 10th 2014 - Carlsberg-UK Snooker Round-Up
Heworth A continued their good start winning their 2nd match 5-2 against Bootham B to go top as Malton did not have a game. They did not start well though as Matt Smith for Bootham B potted well to beat Adam Scaife,but Heworth drew level with Gary Douglas just getting the better of Paul Scorfied.Bootham then took the lead with Paul Powell defeating James Kilmartin. Heworth then took charge winning the remaining 3 matches but still had to work hard none more so than Mark Winskill who had to give John Wortley 55 h/cap start,but he made a 49 break but potted the blue only to go in-off but John then potted pink only for him to go in-off leaving Mark to win the frame.Jordan Worobec (32 break) beat Lionel Barnes,with Neil Wood (51 and 30 breaks) beating Paul Mahoney.
Bootham A got off to a good start beating Heworth B 5-2 despite losing the first frame on the black with John Sherlock defeating Tim Fillingham,but then Bootham won the next three frames with wins from Stuart Martel,Colin Robinson and Mak Darley (24 break).Rob Barron was unlucky to lose on the black as Martin Johnson double kissed the black into the pocket to win for Heworth.John Darley and Barry Rankin then sealed victory for Bootham.
Fulford B took an early lead against Acomb A with Andy Ogley beating Richard Lillie (26 break) before Roland Cox levelled with a respotted black against Bob Smith,Andy Hurley put Fulford back in front only for Nick Marchant (26 and 22 breaks) to level.Two black ball games followed with both going to Acomb Paul Holmes beating Dean Smith and Keith Thornhill defeating Dale Rout.Mick Borg winning last frame against Jim Rollinson on the pink to seal victory.
The game against Acomb B and Fulford A finished with a late supper as the final deciding frame between captains Steve Rodgers(Acomb) and Alan Reed(Fulford)was a tense and defensive match which Steve eventually won.but thanks to the catering the food was still hot!.Acomb won 4-3 their other winners were Kevin Ventress,Neil Goodacre,with replies from Tom Lewis,Sam Wass and Sam England.
September 15th 2014 - Faber Shield Billiards Round-Up
Bootham entertained Acomb on Monday 15th September but soon found themselves 2 frames down as Richard Lillie and Mick Borg both won and also gave Acomb a 93 aggregate lead, howeever Paul Mahoney and Ian Robinson fought back winning for Bootham but could only reduce the deficit by 24 points,this proved too great as Paul Holmes for Acomb won the last frame by 57 points giving A comb a 4-2 victory.
September 17th 2014 - Faber Shield Billiards Round-Up
On 17th September Acomb played last years champions Fulford and again won 4-2,this time they raced to a 3-0 lead with wins from Mick Borg,Trevor Ventress and Richard Lillie who had to hold off Terry Ward who had breaks of 23,24.25 and 34,but Fulford hit back with Alan Reed and Bob Plant winning last 2 frames but could not secure enough points to take the aggregate point.
It is with regret that Bootham A billiards team has had to resign from the league due to lack of players hopefully for this season only ...
September 24nd 2014 - Carlsberg-UK Snooker Round-Up
Acomb A made it back to back wins with a 5-2 success over Bootham A.Richard Lillie,Roland Cox and Nick Marchant (24 break) made it 3-0 to Acomb but Colin Robinson (22 break) beat Trevor Ventress in a battle of the veterans,and Mark Darley cut the deficit for Bootham.However,the comeback was cut short as Paul Holmes narrowly beat Stuat Martel and Mick Borg completed the victory with a black ball win over Steve Carroll.
Paul Scorfied was in top form for Bootham B as he rattled up a 53 break in the first frame to set his team up for a 5-2 victory over Acomb B ,also winning for Bootham were J Robinson,A Proud,Paul Mahoney and Lionel Barnes.Acomb replied with Brian Henry and Nick Goodacre reducing the arrears.
Fulford A white washed their B team 7-0 despite have 3 regular players missing ,however the replacements were up to the task and with wins from Sam Parkinson and Dale Mercer with Pete Dunmore helping out,along with the regular players of Andy Marshall,Sam England,Tom Lewis (27 break) and Jamie Husband (23 break) pulled off a great victory.
Heworth A continued their unbeaten start with a 4-3 win away to current champions Malton the highlight being a 54 break by Jordan Worobec who continued his unbeaten run in the league.The match was closely run as Malton won first two frames by Dominic Spiteri and Steve Beal but Adam Scaife beat Lee Tayor before Simon Weatherhill and Mark Winskill produced a high quality match with Simon clearing the last four colours to seal victory,this gave Malton a 3-1 lead but then Jordan Worobec hit his big break to win for Heworth followed by Neil Wood and Clive Whyte,who was fortunate to win as Dan Pawson only needed the pink which he potted butf ollowed in with the white leaving Clive to pot pink and black.
Heworth A have 14 points but are closely followed by Acomb A and Fulford A on 12 points as the league starts to take shape,Clive Whyte has the highest break of 68,and Mick Borg ,Jordan Worobeck and Neil Goodacre are leading the individual award with 3 wins each.

October 1st 2014 - Faber Shield Billiards Round-Up
Acomb A continued their unbeaten start with success over Heworth. Gary Rogers got the hosts off to a perfect start with breaks of 80 and 53 included in his win over Acombs Barry Manson and Mark Winskill (35 break) followed up just edging out Richard Lillie 150-147 to give Heworth a 2-0 lead.Acombs revival was led by Paul Holmes (20 break) with a comfortable win over Darren Clark then Trevor Ventress levelled the match beating Carl Pasquale 150-132.Mick Borg completed the comeback with a 150-115 victory over Keith Watkinson also giving Acomb the aggregate point in a 4-2 win.
Fulford entertained Bootham and gained a very good win 5-1 with an emphatic win on the aggregate point of 748-607. James Lee set the ball rolling as he won 150-125 over Ian Robinson, then Wayne Puleston ran out 150-112 against Ken Taylor, Alan Reed had a good win against Alf Appleby 150-117 then Terry Ward made the score 4-0 to Fulford with breaks of 31,31,26 and 28 against Tim Fillingham (26 break) but Bob Plant failed to make it a clean sweep when he lost to Paul Mahoney 148-150 when only needing to pot the red but missed leaving Paul two easy pots for victory

October 8th 2014 - Carlsberg-UK Snooker Round-Up
Mick Borg carried on his 100% winning run by making it 4 in a row for Acomb A as he defeated Andi Ireland in Acombs 5-2 win away to Heworth B,Dan Pollard in his first game for Acomb hit a 44 break in his win ,others successful for Acomb were Richard Lillie,Keith Thornhill and Paul Holmes,with P Rivis (37 break) and M Johnson replying for Heworth.
Acomb B lost their home match to Malton 2-5 despite leading 2-1 with victories by John Winter and Jeff Kean ,Dominic Spiteri replying,then Malton took over reeling off the next 4 frames as Lee Taylor, Dan Pawson, Steve Beal and captain Phil Hart completed the win.
Jim Lee got Fulford A off to a great start with a 42 break but had to fight hard as Mark Darley for the hosts Bootham A just failed to win as he jumped the white over the brown ,which was near the baulk pocket with the remaining colours all pottable. However, Bootham then took the next two frames both on the black with Tim Fillingham edging out Andy Marshall and Barry Rankin beating Sam Parkinson in a tense match. Fulford then hit back winning the remaining four frames with Tom Lewis,Sam Wass Jamie Husband and Sam England completing a 5-2 win.
Fulford B entertained Bootham B but soon found themselves 2 nil down as Paul Scorfield, with a 34 break ,and Ian Robinson won, Bob Smith replied for Fulford but P Powell hit back for Bootham, Jim Rollinson(37 break) and Nigel Smith then levelled the match before Lionel Barnes secured a 4-3 result for Bootham.
Acomb A and Fulford A lead the league with 17 points each followed by Heworh A and Malton both with 14 points but have agame in hand over the top two.
October 15th 2014 - Faber Shield Billiards Round-Up
There was only one match played on 15th October but what an eventful one it was with Fulford running out 5-1 winners over Heworth. James Lee (23 break) beat M Winskill (36 break) by 150-50 to open the scoring for Fulford followed by Wayne Puleston (32 break) defeating Brian Birch comfortably 150-95,however the best two matches followed with Gary Rogers securing the only point for Heworth with a nailbiting match against Glen Mountain 150-149. Gary had breaks of 51, 61 and the highest break so far of 87 but managed to hold on at the end. We all thought that that match couldnt be beat for a finish but the one between Terry Ward for Fulford playing off -120 handicap and Darren Clark for Heworth off -55 was even better.Darren started off with a 46 break, Terry managed to copile breaks of 35, 52 and 31 but Darren lead 138-68 neading only 12 more for victory but Terry hit top form and ran out with an 82 unfinished break to seal a remarkable victory. The last match was won by Alan Reed 150-145 over Keith Watkinson who staged a good comeback from over 40 points down to just fail by 5.

October 22nd 2014 - Carlsberg-UK Snooker Round-Up
Heworth A crashed to their first defeat of the season losing to Acomb B 2-5 which included first defeats of the season for Jordan Worobec ,defeated by Acombs Steve Rodgers,and Clive Whyte (26 break) falling to Adam Wade who had 25 and 32 breaks in his win.The only winners for Heworth were Nick Dyson and Joe Kilmartin(35 break) with Acombs John Winter,Kevin Ventress an Andy Stone successfulin a suprise victory.
With both Acomb A and Malton not playing it paved the way for Fulford A to go top of the league as they ran out 5-2 winners against Heworth B .Andy Marshall (25 break) lead the way defeating Paul Walker but Heworth hit back with Peter Revis beating Tom Lewis however Fulford gained control with victories for Jim Lee and Dollin Mercer over Simon Whitley and Andy Ireland.Martin Johnson ,with a 24 break,hit back as Jamie Husband lost his first match.Simon England had a hard fought match against Ian Strickland but hit two good pots on Pink and Black to secure victory, it was left to Sam Wass to continue his unbeaten run by defeating Steve Kelsey in the last match to put Fulford on top.
The final match saw Bootham B defeat their A team 6-1 despite losing the first game , Mark Darley with a 20 break beating Ian Robinson but from then on it was all one way with wins for A Proud Matt Smith,Lionel Barnes,Paul Powell Paul Mahoney and Paul Scorfield who was21 behind Tim Fillingham with all the colours left but he potted all of them with a 27 break to clinch a good victory for Bootham B
October 29th 2014 - Faber Shield Billiards Round-Up
Acomb continued their good start to the season by defeating Bootham 4-2 to remain top of the league.Dan Potter just managed to overcome Paul Mahoney 150-144 to lead the way for Acomb but Matt Smith replied with a sound win 150-85 over Richard Lillie to level the score,but Paul Holmes with breaks of 24 and 23 restored the lead beating Ian Robinson 150-99 however Alf Appleby for Bootham levelled the match with a hard fought 150-141 win against Trevor Ventress.The last match between Mick Borg was all level at 100 each only for Mick to hit breaks of 20 and 28 ,while Tim failed to score, and the final ball to secure victory .
The other match between Heworth and Fulford also went to the last match to decide the outcome but not before Darren Clark(-55 h/cap) for Heworth had a very good win over Terry Ward (-120 h/cap) of Fulford 150-27 with breaks of 49 and 76 despite Terry hitting a 54 break.Wayne Puleston levelled the match with a close win 150-145 over Mark Winskill,then Brian Birch overcome Sam Wass 150-141 but Keith Watkinson lost to Bob Smith 103-150 to make the match all square,but Gary Rogers with breaks of 42,37,60 and 33 clinched victory over Alan Reed 150-123 as Heworth also won the aggregate point to run out 4-2 winners

November 5th 2014 - Carlsberg-UK Snooker Round-Up
Fulford A managed to hold on to top spot despite losing to Acomb A 5-2 but Acomb have a game in hand and are now only 2 points behind.Dan Potter got Acomb off to winning start as he played some good snookers as well as stopping Andy Marshall from running away with the frame ,Dan produced a great comeback despite being over 40 points behind at one stage to clinch an unlikely win.However,Jamie Husband beat Roland Cox on the other table to level the match.This was followed with Richard Lillie easily beating an out of form Sam Wass and then Phil Carlton defeated Jim Lee followed by Keith Thornton victorious over Sam England,Keith fought back well after being well behind ,but got some excellent snookers and potted well to win.This meant that Acomb were now 4-1 up ,but a hard fought respotted black ball win by Tom Lewis reduced the deficit only for Mick Borg to continue his unbeaten run with an impressive win over Dollin Mercer.
Last years champions Malton could only turn out with 6 players which counted against them as they were defeated by Bootham A 4-3.Malton stormed into a 3-0 lead with Dominic Spiteri,Steve Beal and Roger Ward sucessful against Tim Fillingham,Stuart Martel and Simon Carroll respectively,but Bootham then hit back with John Darley beating Dan Pawson(24 break),Barry Rankin winning over Phil Hart,and Rob Barron victorious over S Pawson .
Fulford B entertained Heworth A and nearly pulled off the win only to lose the final game so going down 3-4. Mark Winskill (45 break) just overcome Bob Smith but Arthur Pegden hit back defeating James Kilmartin,Jordan Worobec beat Dave Smith but Andy Ogliy played well in defeating Neil Wood to level the score.Nick Dyson (33 break) hit back for Heworth with a win over Andy Hurley but Jim Rollinson beat Clive Whyte leaving Steve Burdett to secure victory for Heworth beating Nigel Smith.
Heworth B faced Bootham B but ,despite winning three frames lost to Boothams strong side 4-3 the highlight being a 34 unfinished clearance by Jamie Robinson other wins for Bootham were recorded by A Proud,Ian Robinson and Matt Smith with replies from John Sherlock Carl Pasquale and M Johnson.
November 12th 2014 - Faber Shield Billiards Round-Up
Acomb continued their unbeaten run with a 6-0 whitewash of Heworth,Keith Watkinson for Heworth should have got them off to a good start but missed an in-off red to leave John Ashwell to pot red to win 150-147,from then on it was all downhill for Heworth as Dan Potter(30 break) beat Gary Rogers(47,39,30 breaks) 150-8 as Garys -165 Handicap proved too much against Dans solid play,Richard Lillie for Acomb got revenge over Mark Winskill 150-63,then Paul Holmes was made to work hard just pipping Brian Birch 150-144,Mick Borg(31 break) retained his unbeaten run with a comfortable 150-55 victory over Darren Clark.
The other match played resulted in Fulford winning 5-1 against Bootham,Fulford lost the first game as Matt Smith ran out 150-109 over Wayne Puleston but from then on took control with Sam Wass succesful 150-139 in a close match with Paul Mahoney then Alan Reed beat Ian Robinson 150-111,this was followed by Jim Lee winning 150-121 over Alf Appleby and Bob Plant completing the win for Fulford with a 150-138 score against Tim Fillingham.

November 19th 2014 - Carlsberg-UK Snooker Round-Up
Acomb A moved a point clear at the top of the York Conservative Clubs’ Carlsberg UK Snooker League with a 4-3 victory at title rivals Bootham ‘B’. The visitors started in fine style, forging into a 3-0 lead through Roland Cox, Dan Potter and Keith Thornhill, who recorded a 26 break. Andy Proud got Bootham on the board, but Phil Carlton secured the win for Acomb before Paul Powell and Lionel Barnes narrowed the deficit.
Heworth ‘A’ moved level with Fulford ‘A’ in third place in the table with a 4-3 victory over six-man Bootham ‘A’. Gary Douglas won the opener for Heworth, but Bootham responded with wins from Mark Darley and John Darley. Black ball wins for Mark Winskill and Nick Dyson edged Heworth back in front and, although Barry Rankin got the better of Clive Whyte, a walkover for Steve Burdett clinched the match.
Malton ‘A’ are fifth in the table but a 5-2 victory over bottom side Heworth ‘B’ leaves them well placed with at least one game in hand on all their rivals. The first four frames of the match were shared, with wins for Malton’s Simon Weatherill and Roger Ward cancelled out by Heworth’s Andi Ireland and John Sherlock. Malton then took control, cruising home with wins for Dominic Spiteri, Steve Beal and Phil Hart, who hit a break of 44.
The match between Acomb ‘B’ and Fulford ‘B’ followed the same pattern, with the first four games shared before Fulford stormed to a 5-2 success. Jim Rollinson and Bob Smith won for Fulford, but it was 2-2 thanks to victories for Acomb’s Jeff Winter (20 break) and Brian Henry. Andy Ogley beat Steve Rodgers on the black before Fulford’s win was wrapped up by Andy Hurley and Nigel Smith.
Three players are leading the way in the Worthington player of the year race, with Thornhill, Beal and Spiteri all on five wins from five matches. Acomb’s Mick Borg is next with five wins from six outings.
Whyte continues to head the Pasema Paving highest break standings with his break of 68, with Malton’s Lee Taylor second with a 58.
November 26th 2014 - Faber Shield Billiards Round-Up
There was a big win for Acomb as they extended their lead at the top of the table by defeating second placed Fulford 5-1.Dan Potter beat Wayne Puleston(21 break) to start the ball rolling then Mick Borg continued his fine form by hitting a 45 break and easily beating Bob Smith 150-77 however Alan Reed had a comfortable win for Fulford with a 150-103 victory over Trevor Ventress to reduce the aggregate arrears but a fine win by Paul Holmes(24 and 23 breaks)150-38 over Terry Ward (73 break) sealed the aggregate point ,then John Ashwell completed the win by just pipping Jamie Husband 150-141.,/p>
In the other match Heworth got off to a flying start with Darren Clark hitting form with a 51 break and running out with an unfinished break of 60 in his win over Matt Smith ,this was followed with Gary Rogers victory over Tim Fillingham (31 break) which included Gary just failing to hit the first league century of the season with a break of 97 followed by a 42.Paul Mahoney and Ian Robinson both won for Bootham with close matches against Brian Birch and Keith Watkinson but Heworth secured victory 4-2 and the aggregate with Mark Winskill (49 break) win over Alf Appleby .
