February 25th 2004 - Faber Shield Billiards February Roundup
11/2/04: Defending champions Fulford took a step closer to retaining their title without even playing in this round of fixtures. They had to sit out with a free week as rivals Acomb played newcomers Heworth in a close fought match at Heworth Conservative Club. Trevor Ventress took the opening game for Acomb with an impressive 150-117 win over Dave Birch. Chris Thompson leveled things for Heworth, riding his luck to defeat Peter Lawson 150-144. Mick Frampton then defeated the in form Keith Myers 150-120 before Peter Webster made it 3-1 by defeating Ian Gillies by a single point. Bob Ventress beat Alf Appleby 150-135 to reduce the deficit but Keith Watkinson won the final game against John Ashwell by the same score line. This was enough to ensure that Heworth also took the aggregate point by a mere 4 points to secure a 5-2 win. In the other game Bootham A beat their B Team 5-2 to record only their second win of the season. Barry Rankin came from behind to beat George Long and wins for Colin Robinson, Don Pringle and John Woodall along with the aggregate point gave Bootham A 5 points. Tony Lambert beat Ken Taylor (despite Taylor's breaks of 30 and 27) and Tim Fillingham beat John Darley to secure Bootham B's only points.
Fillingham's win keeps him in the hunt for the player of the season competition with 8 wins from 10 games. Trevor Ventress leads with 9 wins from 11 games but has just one more game to play to Fillingham's two. Keith Myers drops to third with 8 wins from 11 games but will not be playing in the final game for Acomb. Richard Stroughair is fourth with 7 wins from 8 games with club colleague Brian Bickerstaff enjoying another great season on 7 wins from 10 games. Heworth's surprise win consolidate their third place in the league with 34 points from 10 games. Fulford remain top with 48 points from 10 games with Acomb remaining in second place with 46 points from 11 games. Colin Neal won a hard fought final frame against Mick Frampton, coming from behind to win 150-147 and clinch the match 5-2 for Fulford. The victory was enough to ensure Fulford had won the title no matter what result second placed Acomb achieved in their final game. However Acomb failed to win their final game, losing 4-3 to Bootham B. Tim Fillingham beat Bob Ventress to close the gap in the player of the season competition and should he win his final game he will tie for the title with current leader Trevor Ventress of Acomb who has 10 wins from 12 games.

In what was an anti-climatic finish to the season both teams knew that the result of this game had no bearing on the final league positions of each team. It was however an entertaining match with several notable breaks and a couple of close finishes. Don Pringle won the opening game for Bootham by 150-148 against Wayne Puleston. Puleston had trailed 148-109 and made a break of 39 only to miss a straight red that would have given him the game. The game was decided on blue when six fouls were made in quick succession. Hartley gained five after snookering Braithwaite, then himself went in-off in potting the blue. Hartley then cleared the colours at his next visit to win a high scoring frame by some 37 points. Mick Frampton pulled one back for Heworth with a fortunate victory over Peter Stroughair.
